What is second economic citizenship?

We would preferably use the term ‘dual nationality’ or ‘second citizenship’ because in reality ‘economic citizenship’ is simply the common form used to refer to the Economic Citizenship Program. ‘Economic Citizenship’ is therefore a program and not a type of citizenship in any way. The Economic Citizenship Program is one of the ways by which a person or a family can obtain the citizenship of a country, in addition to by birth, parentage, marriage and residence.

Is economic citizenship the same as dual citizenship?

Technically, no. Economic citizenship is the name of the program that is administered for granting second passports to individuals. Dual citizenship is the end result or the situation whereby an individual is the citizen of two countries. There are different ways of becoming a dual citizen, which include by being born in one country but parented by persons of a different country, by residency after having lived in a country for a certain period of time, through marriage to some of a different citizenship than yours. Economic citizenship is just one o the ways by which a person can acquire dual citizenship.

Who needs a second passport?

People apply for second passport for different reasons. Currently, many countries are experiencing instability in one form or another – political, financial, economical and social insecurity.  We are faced with high levels of unemployment, surges in crime, political corruption and exposed to civil strife. Many countries are at war, others are faced with worst ever economic crises, in which health, education and employment suffer.  If possible, most would flee these circumstances in search of better living conditions for self and families.  Economic citizenship provides this avenue to freedom. A second passport is insurance to hedge against an uncertain future.

Does economic citizenship mean that you get a special economic status?

No. Economic citizenship does not mean that you become a citizen with special economic status. This program is called economic citizenship program because of the economic contribution that is made by the applicants towards the development of the country in question. Economic citizenship does not have a residency requirement and as a result places no extra burden on the citizen to reside or be present in the country for any specified amount of time. Individuals that become citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis under economic citizenship program are law abiding, regular citizens as every other citizen and enjoy the same rights, privileges and liberties.
